On-the-Job Exercise Not Always Heart-Healthy

FRIDAY, Aug. 8 (HealthDayNews) -- For years, fitness gurus have extolled the virtues of exercise as a way to reduce the risk of heart disease.
But if you get that exercise on the job, it's not necessarily improving your heart health, claims a new study.
In fact, the study says, physically demanding jobs may cause faster progression of atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries.
The culprit, however, appears to be not the activity itself, but the stress that often accompanies physically demanding jobs, says the study, which appears in the July issue of the American Journal of Medicine.
"It's not the activity itself at work, but rather what tends to go along with it," says study leader James Dwyer.
"The modern structure of the work force is that jobs that involve more physical activity tend to involve more stress," adds Dwyer, a professor of preventive medicine at the University of Southern California's Keck School of Medicine. "Those who are left doing physically demanding work tend to be in jobs that involve insecurity and stresses."

Evidence of green tea’s health benefits continues to mount. Studies assert that green tea prevents or fights many forms of cancer, reduces heart disease risks, boosts immune functioning and even improves metabolism. 

- Green tea is rich in antioxidants. According to a recent New York Times article, green tea’s antioxidants – polyphenols – are 20 times more powerful than Vitamin E and 200 times more than Vitamin C. 

- Preliminary studies suggest that drinking 2 to 4 cups of green tea a day may increase resting metabolism slightly. 

- Don’t confuse green tea with "herbal teas." Green tea is made from the same plant as black tea; it’s just processed differently. 

- Green tea does contain some caffeine, although less than black tea and coffees. Decaffeinated green teas are available. 

- You can take green tea as a beverage or as supplements; it can also be used in cooking.

have to know when and how to enlist the help of a massage 
therapist. 

- FOR DELAYED MUSCLE SORENESS. If you’ve had an exceptionally 
heavy workout or participated in a strenuous sporting event, 
getting a professional massage can help lessen the muscle 
soreness that often appears hours or days after you’ve exerted 
yourself. Professional athletes routinely get massages for this 
purpose. 

- FOR INJURIES. Massage increases blood flow; in injured muscles, 
more blood flow promotes healing. However, if you wish to try 
massage for an injury, be sure to get clearance from your 
physician or physical therapist first. (Get a recommendation for 
a massage therapist as well.) A massage that is inappropriate or
improperly administered could cause further and long-lasting 
damage to the injured area.

help to reduce stress by relieving tension.

This is where taking a dual approach to weight loss — using both diet and exercise — becomes so valuable. By restricting your dietary intake by only 250 calories (your average candy bar) and burning off another 250 through cardiovascular exercise (an hour or less, depending on your weight and exercise type and intensity), meeting the 500-calorie quota becomes much more doable.
