Schwarzenegger
Rides Red Hot Campaign in Calif.
August 8, 2003
BELLFLOWER, Calif. (Reuters)
- Arnold Schwarzenegger steamed into the second day of his red hot campaign
for California governor on Friday, vowing to take his intimidating presence
door-to-door across the state to win votes.
"I have so much energy, so
much fire," Schwarzenegger said, shrugging off the sweltering heat in the
Los Angeles suburb of Bellflower during his first official campaign stop
of California's increasingly tumultuous recall election.
"I will be going from home
to home to talk to the people in California," he said. "I will be going
from school to school, knocking on doors, meeting with business leaders.
I will be campaigning fiercely until 0ct. 7 (the date of the recall vote)."
Schwarzenegger exploded into
the race to unseat and then replace embattled California Gov. Gray Davis
(news - web sites) during an appearance on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno
" earlier this week and immediately vaulted to the front of the pack.
New Purported
Saddam Tape Urges Attacks
August 1, 2003
TIKRIT, Iraq - An audiotape
broadcast Friday purporting to carry the voice of Saddam Hussein
issued a new call to arms and said the former leader will "at any moment"
defeat the American occupation forces and return to power. Meanwhile, dozens
of U.S. forces raided two houses in Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit
and captured two men they said were important Saddam associates. The military
refused to identify the pair, caught as then napped in the midday heat.
